John Manire was born October 18, 1737 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia to William & Anne Stone Manire. He was a Methodist Preacher and Farmer in Kentucky.

On February 16, 1758 John was deeded 100 acres lying in Amelia County, Virginia for 5 shillings from his father, William Manire. ("for the natural love and affection for my son John." It's listed in the Deed Book No. 6 for 1768 on Page 149 in Amelia County, Virginia.

John married Elizabeth Jackson "Betty", daughter of William Jackson and Susanna Worsham, in 1761 in Amelia County, Virginia. Betty was born December 30, 1739 in Richmond County, Virginia. Elizabeth was named Betty Manire in her father's Will dated November 1, 1778 in which he bequeathed to her one "negro" boy named Sam. Of this marriage they had 8 known children: Patsey, John William, Daniel Jackson, Stephen, Susannah, Philip, Isaac, and Elizabeth.

John had a will drawn up April 30th, 1808. He named his loving wife Betty Manire and Son'n'Law Daniel Hubbard as the Executrix and Executor of his will. An addenum was added at the bottom of the will, December 9, 1809, stating that John had removed himself from the state and settled in Williamson County, Tennessee. He saw no reason to change his will.

In 1765 John Manire sold land to Joshua Hightower. It's recorded in the Deed Book No. 8 for 1765 on page 671 in Amelia County, Virginia.

In 1770 John sold land to his brother William Manire. It's recorded in the Will Book No. 12 for 1771 on page 305 in Amelia County, Virginia.

John Manire served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant. In "Historical Notes in Amelia County, Virginia" the following note was made: "John Manere is recommended to etc., serve as 2nd Lt. in Capt. William Jones Co. of Militia". He may have signed up January 22, 1778. That would make John Manire about 41 when he signed up. Would a 41 year old Preacher/Farmer sign up for war? John Manire would have had 7 or 8 children by 1778.

On February 24, 1780, John sold land to William Halloway for the sum: "six thousand pounds current money of Virginia." It's listed in the Deed book No. 15 on page 207 in Amelia County, Virginia.

On May 8, 1780 John bought land from John and Sally Bennett in Granville County, North Carolina. The Deed reads: "James Bennett and Sally Bennett deed to James Manire of Amelia County, Virginia for land in Granville County, North Carolina." Notice the name changes? Wonder why they put James instead of John.

John was listed on the List of Souls for the Nap of Reeds District for Granville County, North Carolina in 1786. On the List of Souls, it was recorded for the house of John Manire: 1 White male age 21 - 60, 4 White males under the age 31 or over 60, 5 White females of all ages, and 1 Black 12 - 50. The Census was taken by John Manire who was listed as being a J. P. (Justice of the Peace?).

John was listed on page 65 of the April 7, 1789 Tax Lists for Madison County, Kentucky.

On December 5, 1791 John sold 100 acres of land on Paint Creek in Kentucky to William Fennell. It's listed in the Deed Book B on page 206 in Madison County, Kentucky. On the same day he sold land to William Fennell, he bought land from him. He bought 100 acres of land in Madison County, Kentucky on the waters of Lick Creek and bounded as follows: "begin at Sugar Saplin on Lick Log branching the Thomas Allen line then with his line to his corner on Edmond Terrels line 100 acres." It's listed in Deed Book B on page 206 in Madison County, Kentucky.

In the book "History of Garrard County and its' Churches" by Forrest Calico (Hobson Press, NY 1946), John was listed on page 195 under "The following ministries were licensed in 1792 to perform marriages : John Manire, Methodist." He was listed on page 210 under "Early settlers in Garrard County before 1800 (many as early as 1783) : John Manire." He was also listed on page 497 under: "Halliday's Chapel (supposedly a Methodist meetinghouse) : John Manire was probably preaching here long before 1800, since he lived in this region about 1796 when Garrard County was formed."

John was listed on the 1797 Tax Rolls for Garrard County, Kentucky with: 100 acres of land on Paint creek, 1 Male over 21, 1 Black over 16, and 2 Horses.

John was listed on the 1799 Tax Rolls for Garrard County, Kentucky with: 100 acres of land on Paint Creek, 1 Male over 21, 1 Black over 16 and 3 Horses.

John was listed on the 1808 Tax Lists for Garrard County, Kentucky as John McNear.                                          

On April 30, 1808 in Garrard County, Kentucky John Manire signed his will naming his wife as the sole beneficiary. It's listed in the Will Book No. 1 on page 323 for

Williamson County, Tennessee. The will was written in Garrard County, Kentucky but is on file in Williamson County, Tennessee. This was because the family moved to Williamson County, Tennessee.

On December 9, 1809 in Williamson County, Tennessee John wrote an addendum to his will that stated: "I hereby certify that I have removed and settled myself in Williamson County, in the state of Tennessee and do not see cause to alter this, my last will and testament, given under my hand and seal this 9th day of December 1809." I believe the will is also listed on page 258 on Roll #87 in the Williamson County Clerks Records Volume 1 - 3 for July 1800 to January 1825 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

So far the family has migrated from Virginia, through North Carolina and Kentucky to Tennessee. In November of 1812, John Manire died in Williamson County, Tennessee at the age of 75 years old. His wife "Betty" died sometime after 1809 as she is listed as the beneficiary of John's will. Could she have died sometime about 1814 in Chapel Hill, Tennessee?

One of John and Betty Manire's daughters was Patsey Manire. We aren't sure when she was born but she supposedly married Henry Mountjoy Hudson on December 25, 1804 in Garrard County, Kentucky. Now the marriage either didn't last long or Patsey died as Henry turned around and married Nancy Moor(e) on December 27, 1805. That's one year after he married Patsey.

Stephen Manire was born in 1769. He married Elizabeth Henderson on October 23, 1797 in Garrard County, Kentucky. I haven't found any evidence of any children yet, but I'm still looking. I don't know anything about Elizabeth Henderson or her family.

Isaac Manire was born in 1778 in Amelia County, Virginia. He married Rhoda Heath (Heeth) on February 19, 1801 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Nothing else is known about these two people.

Elizabeth Manire was born in 1782. She was called "Betsy". She married Daniel Hubbard, just not sure which one. Daniel was listed as Executor of his Father-n-Law's Will along with his Mother-n-Law, Betty, who was the Executrix.
